That is really, really bizarre. Do you have LD_LIBRARY_PATH or LD_PRELOAD set in the environment? Are you sure you don't have extra libs installed somewhere? What's in your ld.so.conf? What does "ldd /usr/bin/gnome-system-monitor | grep glib" say?
