I can't believe you're dismissing this with such arguments.
I'll repeat what Ryan said: it is NOT your job to invent sonames. That
is upstream's job. It is also not cool to make Debian 3.1's GNOME1
incompatible with every other.

Can you not see this is a very important breakage, and not being able to
install two -dev packages isn't?
