wouldn't it be nicer to have a separate packet i.e. esd-gnome2 dependent on gnome-session, which enables the settings in gconf and gconf-editor ?
so users without gnome could tweak around in /etc/esound and gnome users could use the centralized config in gconf-editor.
...just an idea...
