I was thinking about this recently. Basically the question is: how closely should our "gnome" package reflect upstream's idea of the GNOME Desktop? I'm thinking about making a "gnome-core" package which would serve that role, and then having our "gnome" package be very featureful; to the point of possibly say recommending abiword, evolution, galeon, and rhythmbox for example (and gnome-vfs-extras2 of course). So the "gnome" package would reflect our best-of-breed applications, and give you a full working desktop environment, much like what happens with an initial installation of Red Hat 8 (AIUI). This would be installed by default with the desktop task. People who don't want all this could simply install gnome-core instead, and then pick and choose the apps they want. This split is basically analogous to the distinction between "x-window-system" and "x-window-system-core". In fact, if no one has any serious objections, I think I'll do this with the next meta-gnome upload.
