Something similar happened here. I got the splash screen pretty soon after gdm but then it just stood there and no icons or text appeared at the bottom. I waited a few minutes (I have a Duron 750 here) and it began drawing the icons at normal speed and eventually gave me the desktop. The next time I logged in, there was no such delay. I don't know what it was doing. strace showed it sending binary data down some socket and then waiting for a response. But I can't even remember which process I traced. :-( Could this be related to the many CJK fonts I've installed?
