A recent upgrade of fontconfig-related libraries or configuration seems to have created some problems with font hinting.
See http://readams.net/badfont.png to see an example (notice the second line and the highly suboptimal shape for the font). This seems most noticable with the Verdana and Arial fonts from msttcorefonts. When I disable font hinting, the problem with the itty-bitty vowels goes away, but that creates its own font-ugliness problems. Has there been some change made to the TrueType hinting support in fontconfig or xft2 in debian? -Rob Adams
