Hey Luis,
Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, I'm already using the xserver-xfree86 package from unstable and am having the problem.
The weird thing is that I've discovered that it is only happening for 1 user. I've tried clearing all of the .gnome* directories as well as the .gconf* directories and letting the system rebuild them. No good. I've got a few other things to try which are mostly work-arounds. I can't figure out what would be different about this 1 user that would cause Gnome to exhibit the freezing at the splash screen.
At work I have a knoppix-based installation with the following (and gnome-2.4 works fine):
$> dpkg --list | grep 4.3
ii libdps1 4.3.0-0ds4 Display PostScript (DPS) client library
ii libxaw7 4.3.0-0ds4 X Athena widget set library
ii libxaw7-dev 4.3.0-0ds4 X Athena widget set library development file
ii twm 4.3.0-0ds4 Tab window manager
ii xbase-clients 4.3.0-0ds4 miscellaneous X clients
rc xdm 4.3.0-0ds4 X display manager
ii xfonts-100dpi 4.3.0-0ds4 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-100dpi- 4.3.0-0ds4 100 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 106
ii xfonts-75dpi 4.3.0-0ds4 75 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi-t 4.3.0-0ds4 75 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 1064
ii xfonts-base 4.3.0-0ds4 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-base-tr 4.3.0-0ds4 standard fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10
ii xfonts-scalabl 4.3.0-0ds4 scalable fonts for X
ii xfree86-common 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System (XFree86) infrastructure
ii xfs 4.3.0-0ds4 X font server
rc xlibmesa4-gl 4.3.0-0ds4 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86]
rc xlibmesa4-glu 4.3.0-0ds4 Mesa OpenGL utility library [XFree86]
ii xlibs 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client libraries
ii xlibs-data 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client data
ii xlibs-dev 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client library development f
ii xnest 4.3.0-0ds4 nested X server
ii xserver-common 4.3.0-0ds4 files and utilities common to all X servers
ii xserver-xfree8 4.3.0-0ds4 the XFree86 X server
ii xterm 4.3.0-0ds4 X terminal emulator
ii xutils 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System utility programs
I remeber that in this computer I was having those issues before and I started deleting all dot files that were unecessary. Like .Xdefaults and so on...
Things got fixed however, once I "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" and let it rebuild the fonts cache. Also, look for a ".fonts.cache-1" file in your $HOME.... maybe removing this file and letting it be rebuild has something to do with it also...
This is the version i have installed now: ii fontconfig 2.2.1-12 generic font configuration library
