We should work to improve the GNOME menu rather than keeping this system ...
If we would end with a system this allows each package to register in the Gnome system. The interface in Debian is the menu package which cares for any UI and I see no reason why Gnome should be an exception here. And please keep in mind that a multi user environment might contain different types of users (user roles). This is a requirement for Custom Debian Distributions
