Havoc's work on D-Bus and Robert Love's work (look up Project Utopia at freedesktop.org) will hopefully sort out this kind of crap that we are struggling with :-( Linux is my platform of choice but I do get a bit peeved with having to screw around with restarting FAM just to eject my camera!
