Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on? Have you checked if your gconf setting for the background image is correctly updated?
gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop false
logout/login, the background is back.
Confirmed: this solves the problem for me.
Apart from writing it in the README.Debian file, wouldn't it be a better idea to run this automatically, if necessary?
