AFAIK, g-v-m also needs special treatment of /etc/fstab in order to enable it to actually mount the stuff (as a user), did you look for that? I've no idea how this is handled in Debian, but perhaps the documentation might give you a hint on this. Of course, this is a shot in the dark and you may very well be fine WRT /etc/fstab, dunno.
