You might find some answers in a message I sent previously titled "GNOME 2.10 schedule proposal". There's nothing like a timeline because some things can take a lot of time, such as the migration to testing of gnome-vfs2, and also because the amount of work it takes to package things is not predictible (in part because you can't tell how much time you'll be able to spend).
