As stated under the Goals section of the gnome2.2 backport homepage [1], maintenance of the gnome2.2 backport would be terminated when Debian Woody is end of lifed. Today it was announced [1] that security support for Debian 3.0 will be terminated on June 30th, 2006, therefore security support for the gnome2.2 backport will also end on this date.
