Hi. I thought I'd fill you in on what we've been doing for the past couple of years. I'm the distribution manager for the Familiar project. We have, for better or worse, our own distribution of Linux. It uses .deb-format files, and some older .ipkg-format files, and our own package installed called ipkg. These packages are sometimes built from Debian-arm binaries, and are sometimes compiled by the packager.
More information is at http://familiar.handhelds.org, http://gpe.handhelds.org, and http://opie.handhelds.org. The latter two are built on top of Familiar. Jim Connor (Tangent) has done a Debian distribution called Intimate which installs onto a big CF or microdrive. You can get more information from http://intimate.handhelds.org . We would like to move to being able to install Debian packages. Of course, there's a lot of bloat in Debian packages (relative to 16MB flash). The main obstacle we see to being able to do this is having to re-package .debs into .udebs. Plus, some .debs will have to be split up into multiple .debs, and the dependencies re-done.
