Quite honestly, the Haskell Platform is the least of the worries for Haskell on Debian. The main problem is that Haskell on Debian has still not completed the transition from version 6.8.2 to 6.10.1 to 6.10.3 of ghc. Some 25-50% of the binary packages still depend on 6.8.2 while the vast majority of the rest still depend on 6.10.1. For instance something as fundamental as haskell-network (on which many other packages depend) is still broken (Debian bug #531658) more than 2 weeks after ghc 6.10.3 was uploaded. I have been advocating setting up a system like the one used by the debian-ocaml-maintainer group, which faces exactly the same binary compatibility problem as Haskell, but manages to complete well over 90% of the transition within two weeks of a new version of the ocaml compiler being uploaded. However, I don't come here to complain, I come here to help. I have recently applied to become a Debian Maintainer and once I am accepted I am more than willing to help out however I can.
