Cool! Thanks for the timely reply! I just grabbed all the 0.5.4 packages in that dir and did "dpkg -i" with them and it fixed it!

Yeah, known issue. We had a c++ Binary Event and apt is written in c++, so you're kindof hosed. The solution is to ftp a new version of apt and use dpkg to install it. ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/apt/ -- get 0.5.4
BTW, how can I set my console to 38400 baud rather than 9600 baud?
