I am also a novice and came across similar problem as you have described.
I solved the problem by merely increased the ramdisk_size to 32768. I used the latest iso CD images from Debian site, dated 27 April.
The HP workstation is a B2000 with 256MB memory, with USB keyboard, mouse and HP P910 monitor.
