Many thanks for the quick responses. Your advice did the trick. As it turns out, I had the Grub partition number right, but the Mach slice number was off. This issue is indeed covered at great length in the Hurd FAQ-- my apologies for not looking there first. I had relied on the Install instructions included with the GHKK, which seem to indicate that slice numbers count up from zero and thus track the Grub partition number. Again, thanks for your help.
