It's not bash, it's the "test" binary. Try "which [". RH seems to have a n old or broken version of shellutils if test is from the GNU shellutils on RH.
In most shells, [ and test are builtins, and the `test' binary and `[' hard link are never used unless the builtins are disabled or the binaries are invoked with an absolute path.
