In ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/hurd/misc/init-spin-on-crash.gz (only 15k) is a gzip'd stripped binary of /hurd/init with the hack I just posted to spin rather than rebooting when the system crashes. Use this if you are having trouble catching the console msgs before it reboots.
