Thanks for your help, mkswap was what was missing. In case any one else is interested the swap has to be the old style liunx swap (-v0) not the new style (-v1). Everything seems fine now. Well, I believe the new style swap will also work if your Hurd is new enough. The Hurd included in the tarball you used is probably not new enough. Mark
