Hey, thanks for the help. Im now able to actualy start the booting of the
Hurd. this is what I entered into GRUB:

root=(hd0,4)
kernel=/boot/gnumach.gz root=hd0s4
module=/boot/serverboot  (I 'gunzip -d serverboot.gz' as per the
                          suggestion of a previous post, should 
                          I have left it gz'd?)

I then typed 'boot' and away it went. But then after it did the
initial booting, it got past serial devices I think, and got this 
error:

        hd04: bad access: block=28, count 2, blockend=30, nr_sects
        end request: I/O error, dev 03:03, sector 28

it then hung. can anyone help diagnose the problem here?
