Hi, I discovered Hurd thanks to Linux Magazine. Actually there are several articles about Hurd in this magazine. I don't know who was interviewed but I can summarize them. Here are the translations (please forgive the faulty English) of their abstracts: 1. "How to install GNU/Hurd" (Original title: "Installer GNU/Hurd") Linux Magazine 9, September 1999 "The GNU/Hurd is the OS entirely created by the GNU project. The system usually called Linux is actually GNU/Linux, in other words a GNU system based on the Linux kernel. One of the objectives of the GNU project is to create a complete OS and one of the last elements still missing on the system is indeed a GNU kernel. The development of the kernel began a few years ago, then the project was put a little bit aside. But it has been started off with a renewed energy for a few months thanks to - among other things - the contribution of the Debian team. In fact the upcoming "potato" distribution should be released both in GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd versions. From a text of Matthew Vernon (http://www.pick.ucam.org/~mcv21/hurd.html)." Then follows the description of the installation process, from partitioning to first configuration. 2. "Gnu Grub: The bootloader" (Original title: "Gnu Grub : Le bootloader") Linux Magazine 10, October 1999 "GRUB is the GRand Unified Bootloader. As its name tells, it is a system loader like LILO. Originally written by Erich Stefan Boleyn, it has become a FSF project today and is essentially used in the framework of the GNU Hurd project." Outlines: What is a bootloader ? History of GRUB Specifications Installation and configuration 3. "Hurd's translators" (Original title: "Les traducteurs du Hurd") Linux Magazine 10, October 1999 "As we seen in summary last month, the Hurd is an Unix-type OS based on a Mach (pronounce Mahrrr) microkernel, which the Hurd servers - in charge of the system management - orbit. As in any Unix-like system, file access takes place through directories. The Hurd goes beyond ..." Outlines: Short description of what a translator is Key features of translators (ftp, archives, source compilation, ...) Examples: ext2fs, pfinet Differences between settrans and mount Quick overview of settrans 4. "Interview with Gordon Matzigkeit" (Original title: "Interview avec Gordon Mazigkeit") Linux Magazine 11, November 1999 "The GNU/Hurd project has more and more the wind aft. Its development - as much in the system level as in application porting - speeds up and speeds up. Let's see with Gordon Mazigkeit why GNU/Hurd will become one the most flexible and powerful systems in the world ..." -------------------- That's all up to now. Hope this will be helpful. No doubt there will be more articles about Hurd in Linux Magazine because they've added "& Hurd" after "Linux" in their title page. Any comment is welcome. -------------------- I also need some help. The descriiption of my trouble follows: I've downloaded (1999/11/07) the binary distribution of the Hurd from ftp.debian.org. It is cross-install'ed on /dev/hda3 (I followed the process described in the first article). I get the following message at boot time (before doing native-install): Hurd server bootstrap: ext2fs.static[hd0s3] execext2fs.static: ../../libdiskfs/boot-start.c:416: diskfs_execboot_fsys_startup: Unexpected error: No such file or directory. memory_object_data_request(0x0, 0x0, 0x2000, 0x1000, 0x1) failed, 268435459 Then the system hangs. I've had a look at the mail archives and the existing documentation but didn't find anything related to my problem. What's wrong ? What did I forget ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yann Pouillon 28 rue du Kronthal Tel: +33 (0) 388270760 Cronenbourg Fax: +33 (0) 388270760 (sur demande) 67200 STRASBOURG Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FRANCE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yann Pouillon 28 rue du Kronthal Tel: +33 (0) 388270760 Cronenbourg Fax: +33 (0) 388270760 (sur demande) 67200 STRASBOURG Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FRANCE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yann Pouillon 28 rue du Kronthal Tel: +33 (0) 388270760 Cronenbourg Fax: +33 (0) 388270760 (sur demande) 67200 STRASBOURG Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FRANCE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
