I have the latest version of grub I could find...in fact I have 6 versions
of grub, but the one I am using is the grub-boot.image file directed from
the easy installation guide 
I can see your point however as some of the older versions I tried did not
accept the .gz formats of the kernel and module, however there are no
complaints from grub when I load these now.
