Hi again. Maybe I should have added that I made the grub boot floppy from alpha.gnu.org - the grub-boot-0.5.93.1.image using dd if<grub..> of=/dev/fd0. I also tried the old grub-boot.image (gnu-0.2) and grub-floppy-19991023 as above, and also with bs=512
