Yes, the culprit is 'xterm' After compiling rxvt (thanks for the patch, Marcus) the command 'file /dev/tty' gives me 'character special (0/0) in rxvt. So now it works.
Too bad I do not have the time to check the xterm source, Marcus said it is hard to read (spaghetti). And Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-C work in rxvt, too.
