The easiest cure (and the one I use under Linux) is to tell xterm to
generate <esc>x when you type alt-x by putting the following in your
.Xdefaults:
XTerm.VT100.eightBitInput: False
XTerm.VT100.metaSendsEscape: True
XTerm.VT100.Translations: #override\n\
Meta <KeyPress>:insert-eight-bit()\n
