IIRC, the packaged su comes with setuid NOT set. "chmod u+s /bin/su" should fix things. FWIW, "login root" should also work as an alternative to "su -" I think most hurd users are naughty at the moment and do everything as root, so bugs like this can linger ... -- Robbe
