The size is the key.

I've finally tracked this down to m4. It uses fwrite(), and later
read() on the same fd. Ts, ts. It's funny that of all the platforms m4
runs on only Hurd punishes this transgression ...

Anyway, a patch was sent to the BTS, but not yet processed. It should
show up on <URL:http://bugs.debian.org/m4> soon.
