I just figured out why so many packages are failing on Turtle1. I've now patched dpkg-shlibdeps and added /usr/X11R6/lib to LD_LIBRARY_PATH per Marcus' earlier instructions.
Hopefully tetex-bin will compile correctly now. Tks, Jeff Bailey
