It sounds like they just have no clue about using autoconf properly, from
reading a little bit of that thread.  It is completely straightforward to
use autoconf when the needs are straightforward, and there is no reason a
properly written autoconf configure script should ever need command-line
options to enable all the reasonably desireable default features.
