OK then, does one conditionalise on (e.g.) MAXHOSTNAMELEN:
#ifdef MAXHOSTNAMELEN
/* do it the traditional way */
#else
/* do it the Hurd way, typically using realloc() */
#endif
for each occurance of MAXHOSTNAMELEN (or whatever)?
