OK, after monkeying around like neal said and setting the gateway address by
hand doing fsysopts /servers/socket/2 -g x.x.x.x I am able to access the outside
world with ppp. Only problem is that it hangs a lot, especially when doing a
large transfer. Seems the only thing that works all the time is using ping. I
cannto apt-get any packages and I also cannot do anything that has a decent size
amount of data to transfer. E.g, ftp alpha.gnu.org then I do ls and it hangs. I
can also telnet into a box but as soon as I tell it to do something that has
more than a few lines of output (sometimes a simple ls) it will also hang.
Finally, it seems that the interface just goes down sometimes, but does not
disconnect my modem so it stays locked (all lit up). Also I get these sorts of
error message in the system logs:
