John: I haven't tried using the baseHurd.tgz for an installation. Unless others recommend differently, I would use the installation guide from: http://web.walfield.org/papers/hurd-installation-guide/english/hurd-install-guide.html and download the latest tar ball (if you can do this) from ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/hurd/contrib/marcus/gnu-20020523.tar.gz If this isn't an option, perhaps someone with experience with the H4 CD's can help.
