I think it's supposed to be mounted read/write. Was it cleanly unmounted the last time? (you could try fsck'ing it from GNU/Linux to make sure) A way to make the computer _not_ reboot automatically would help, but alas, I don't know of any good ones that don't involve recompiling the kernel.
