I think that this task is directly related to X. In fact, I know recall that the gl stuff in X was doing something weird, like linking a C library to libstdc++ or something like that. This is the X patch where you add -lstdc++, I think. This might be the root of all evil, and you should carefully analyse this situation and check out where the problem is.
