But if X is told to use the i810 driver instead of vesa, would'nt it expect some extended operation? (dri,  allocate the full chipset video ram or something else)

I don't know exactly, but from the i810 driver point of view, it's
just a PCI device, no explicit kernel actions should be needed IFF
enough RAM was reserved by the BIOS.
