stat will trigger the translator. ls /dev does not stat, since it just
gives the content of the directory, not the contained inodes.
Duh.. of course.. I should have known ! (It kind of would have surprised
me that 'ls -l' would 'open' the file - too many possible and unwanted
side effects !).
