Indeed, -M q35 makes the installer get past the problem I encountered previously.
I have no idea why, though. AFAIK CDROM support is a quite basic, old qemu feature, that I'd assume to work well no matter the chipset (and it worked fine for me without -M q35 for Linux and OpenBSD). But I'm just a very basic user of virtualization and OSes, so me having no idea here is no surprise.
