Pardon me if I'm butting in and seem impertinent but I was wondering whether Devuan was encountering any similar problems and I found this thread on their forum https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=7600 - where the opensysusers' systemd-sysusers utility was ignoring local configuration ranges for UIDs and GIDs and instead using compiled in values. It seems to me that the failure to create the group referred to in the Debian bug report could have arisen because of a clash with between what it wanted to do and previously allocated values. Now it seems that Devuan could or is switching away from that package to a more POSIX-ish shell script using adduser/addgroup. Perhaps the Hurd might look to do the same?
