OE and AE ligatures are already defined for most (if not all) locales: $ echo � | LANG=nb_NO iconv -f ISO-8859-15 -t ascii//translit oe $ echo � | LANG=nb_NO iconv -f ISO-8859-15 -t ascii//translit ae See translit_compat and translit_neutral for details. You only have to define the � -> aa transliteration in Norwegian locales, as in Danish. Denis
