Ah, those strings (character sets) are from console-setup. It's an (IMO) quite ugly way of marking a difference between two categories of choices. I hope some other solution for that will be found some time. At the moment you should just translate the strings and leave the leading "."s and "#"s in place in your translation. The following string explains a bit: "If you don't use a framebuffer, the choices that start with \".\" will " "reduce the number of available colors on the console."
