Right now I'm in the process of migrating the Spanish translation to gettext. PO files are created, just need to fillup the headers with translation credits. It's not that hard, you just need to have your translation 100% complete so poxml creates correct PO files. The file doc/translations_po.txt links to an email where the whole process is explained. If some problems arise during conversion, the translator just needs to look carefully at the output sent by the tools, and correct where needed. All in all, it took me about 30 or 40 minutes to find out and fix the problems that appeared once I had a complete translation, so I don't think it's much time-consuming.
