The libsdl1.2-linking-static-X-libraries problem is a very real one and affects several architectures, including PPC, PA-RISC (HPPA) and IA64.
As I'm sure you are well aware, libsdl is used by many packages and thus this problem is preventing many (~100 is my guess) packages from being built on those three architectures. Please fix this ASAP. libsdl1.0 has an example of how to fix this problem. Or, if you prefer, let me know and one of the ppc/hppa/ia64 porters will arrange to do a proper fix and NMU with a patch mailed to this bug.
