Torsten, I don't know how helpful this will be but I recommned that you make sure to select all of the ia64 specific stuff in General. I also had issues with the 2.4.22 and .18 kernels. I successfully compiled the 2.4.20 kernel though. So if you are just dying to give something a shot I recommend that one.
