It is NOT safe to assume that you have a DNS name when using IPv6, so, 
sending one's IPv6 address is very much the only sensible option to me.

Yes it is correct. IP addresses have a different format for SMTP:
"[1.2.3.4]" for IPv4 and "[IPv6:1:2:3:4:5:6:7:8]" for IPv6.
