cordiali saluti

--- Begin Message ---Dear Cesare Fontana:I am writing to ask for your help in recalling the influence of Claude Shannon, mathematician and a founder of modern computing. As you know, Shannon's pioneering work on information theory led to critical advances in binary coding, electronic communications, data storage, and other digital technologies. If you worked with Dr. Shannon or were influenced by his work, I ask you to join your colleagues in mathematics, computer science and information technology by taking a brief moment to record your memories at ECHO, a Web site that collects the recent history of science and technology. The site is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and administered by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. Stories collected by ECHO will provide those interested in the past half-century of innovation in computing and its associated fields with a better sense of Shannon's impact as well as the role of those who have been impacted by Shannon's work. You may add your memories at http://echo.gmu.edu - follow the links to the "Featured Project" (look for the photo of Dr. Shannon) or to the "Memory Bank." If you prefer to submit an entry via e-mail, please send your responses to the following questions: 1) What are your most vivid memories of Claude Shannon? 2) How did Claude Shannon affect your own work? E-mails may be sent to Dan Cohen at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you in advance for your submission to this memorial project. And please feel free to forward this message to your colleagues. Sincerely, Greg Goodale Research Assistant ECHO: Exploring and Collecting the History Online - Science and Technology (703) 993-4585 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://echo.gmu.edu
