G'day Francis, Many thanks for the suggestions. I tried all the above packages, but still get the 'Metric (TFM) file not found' error in cjk-latex. Since this is apparently a known bug in debian cjk-latex (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=165350) I think I'll just give up for the time being and use the Solaris machines at work.
