If you install language-env and then run set-language-env it will do
most of your environment for you. I do it as another user then use
Xnest to seperate the environments (I don't understand japanese properly
yet).
BTW gnome-terminal with antialiased fonts works quite well for japanese
as well. :)
The only thing that was needed for me to get Japanese input working in
most cases is starting kinput2 and setting
export LANG=ja_JP
export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2"
(Although you may just want to set LC_ALL=ja_JP if you don't speak
japanese.natively).
