Hi, I just installed a brand new Lenny on a computer at home this weekend. If you leave me a few days, I will cross-check that the hiraganas and katakanas come from a font that does not provide kanjis. In that case, there is indeed no bug :) Since you found out that iceweasel behaves the same, if there is a bug, I think that it will have to be forwarded to another yet undetermined package.
